We were thinking that Apple might make a Mac Pro update, with rumours pointing to the Mac Pro getting a new Intel Xeon W processor - specifically an Ice Lake Xeon processor. (Read: Mac Pro update rumours).
Well Apple has indeed made an update to the Mac Pro, but it's not the processor that has changed - at least, not as far as we know. Apple has launched a collection of new graphics options for the 2019 Mac Pro.
Apple used to offer Radeon Vega II graphics options, but these are now replaced by new graphics card options for its high-end Mac Pro computer:
- Radeon Pro W6800X, from £2,400/$2,400
- Radeon Pro W6900X, from £5,600/$5,600
You can still get the following options:
- Radeon Pro W5500X, from £200/$200
- Radeon Pro W5700X, from from £600/$600
- And the standard Radeon Pro 580X
The new graphics are based on Radeon's latest development, the Radeon Pro W6000-Series GPU, and are aimed at professionals who create complex graphics calculations in Octane X, Davinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro. Octane X is supposed to run up to 84 percent faster with it, the real-time interaction in Maxon Cinema 4D is 26 percent faster and in Davinci Resolve you get a speed advantage of 23 percent. Packing two W6800X Duo into the Mac Pro can achieve GPU performance of up to 60 teraflops and can take 128GB of video memory.
Apple has decommissioned the Vega II and Vega II Duo previously offered in build-to-order, which are still available separately for existing customers.
