Many Apple users pay a monthly iCloud subscription for additional online storage space on top of the (rather paltry) 5GB you get for free. In recent years, Apple has sweetened the deal by also giving paying subscribers the ability to store recordings from surveillance cameras with HomeKit Secure Video. But soon iCloud subscriptions will be significantly expanded with a raft of privacy and security features, announced at WWDC 2021.
This autumn, the paid-for subscription service - in line with other recent Apple services such as TV+, Fitness+ and many more - will change its name to iCloud+ and add several new features.
iCloud Private Relay is a kind of modernised web proxy, with some of the elements of a VPN. When active, your web traffic is sent, encrypted, via two separate servers, with the goal of preventing any individual server from knowing who you are or what you're looking at online. Apple boasts that "no one can use your IP address, location, and browsing activity to create a detailed profile about you."
Hide My Email generates random aliases that will be redirected to your usual inbox, meaning you don't have to give out your real email address. You can later remove an address to stop redirects from it, if a retailer or other unscrupulous marketer starts spamming you with unwanted emails.
Apple is also expanding the number of cameras you can use with HomeKit Secure Video. It's not clear yet how many you'll be allowed, but during the event Apple hinted that there will be a camera if you pay for 50GB of space, up to five cameras if you have 200GB and an unlimited number if you have 2TB.
The prices of the various tiers will not change.
