With four months to go until Apple announces its new iPhone 13 handsets for 2021, we're starting to get a decent idea of what to expect. Two or three rumours have come up again and again this cycle, with multiple sources reaching something close to a consensus that, for example, the notch is going to get significantly smaller this year.
The specific details are murkier. We reported on the theory back in October, when the leaker Ice Universe claimed the notch would be shorter rather than narrower; something Jon Prosser agreed with in a video in January. Yet reports more recently have argued that, on the contrary, the notch is set to become narrower (dropping from a width of 34.83mm to 26.80mm) but very slightly deeper (from 5.3mm to 5.35mm).
Pretty much everyone now agrees, meanwhile, that once-popular theories that Apple would remove the notch altogether are overly optimistic.
What is new, however, is a claim from the Taiwanese site DigiTimes regarding the way that Apple will shrink the much-maligned screen intrusion. One of the reasons the notch is getting smaller, the site reports, is that Apple has chosen a new Face ID sensor that's half the size of the current one.
The smaller Face ID sensor will not only be used in this year's iPhone models, but also in next year's iPad Pros. But none of this changes the apparent fact that those who long for a completely notch-free iPhone will have to wait at least another year.
