Second beta of iOS 14.6 arrives

Apple's only just released iOS 14.5 but it already has the second beta version of iOS 14.6 out!

Work on the iOS 14.6 beta began in April with Apple releasing the first developer beta of iOS 14.6 on 22 April 2021.

Apple will show iOS 15 at the beginning of June at WWDC and release it as a developer preview, then major innovations are to be expected again. In between there will be another update for the iPhone operating system, yesterday Apple released the first developer version of iOS 14.6 , a public beta could follow today or early next week.

iOS 14.6 release date

iOS 14.5 was months in the making, but it was a big update to iOS 14. The iOS 14.6 update may not be as feature heavy as Apple will be gearing up to launch the beta of iOS 15 following the WWDC event on 7 June. Read about what's expected at WWDC in our news round up.

With that in mind we would expect to see iOS 14.6 before WWDC in June, so a May update is possible. But the tweaks to iOS 14.5 may just arrive following the WWDC event - perhaps in relation to new Apple products that could arrive at that event.

What's in iOS 14.6?

It's still early days, so not many of the new features are known, however it does seem that some more changes are coming to Apple Music.

In the code of the first beta there were indications that Apple Music will also offer music in high resolution (hi-res).

How to get the iOS 14.6 beta

One of the best things about Apple's beta program (read: How to become an Apple beta tester) is that it gives us an insight into the new features and change that are coming to iPhones. But you should beware that beta versions usually contain a lot of bugs, so the installation is at your own risk.

If you are interested in participating in testing the new updates, you can go to the Apple Beta Software Program and enter your details.

Apple also runs beta programs for iPadOS, tvOS, WatchOS, and macOS.
