On 7 June, at the opening presentation of WWDC 2021, Apple will unveil new versions of its five flagship operating systems, including iOS 15 and iPadOS 15.
According to a new report from Bloomberg's Apple expert Mark Gurman, there will be major changes compared to today's versions.
The system for notifications is being fundamentally redesigned, for example. It will be possible to switch between different notification settings - such as audible or silent alerts - depending on whether you're at work, behind the wheel, asleep or in other custom contexts. You can set tailored automated replies in these statuses, too, in an expansion of the feature previously offered while using the Do Not Disturb While Driving mode added back in iOS 11.
The home screen for iPad also gets an overhaul, which among other things makes it possible to place widgets in any location, potentially entirely replacing the traditional grid of app icons.
Gurman also says there will be an updated lock screen and a new version of Messages, as Apple continues to push its iMessage service in the direction of a full-on social network. The changes to Messages may be delayed until past the initial launch of iOS 15, potentially arriving in a later beta version, or in a point update after the autumn.
In addition, Apple is stepping up its security and privacy efforts.
Gurman cites "people with knowledge of the matter" as the source for his revelations, adding that they requested anonymity. Apple's official communications team have declined to comment on the claims.
