Apple has been sentenced to pay fines totalling 906.3 million rubles (roughly £8.7m) by a court in Russia, after the company was adjudged to have violated the country's competition laws.
Two years ago Apple removed a number of parental control apps from the App Store, including Kaspersky Safe Kids. This prompted the (Russia-based) security company to submit a report to the Russian competition authority FAS, claiming that the App Store was a monopoly, and in August 2020 the FAS determined that Apple was indeed abusing its dominant position.
Russian authorities have been examining Apple's position carefully over the past couple of years. In September a bill was proposed in the Russian lower house to force Apple to allow iPhone owners to install software from places other than the App Store.
According to the news agency Reuters, Apple intends to appeal the verdict, with which it "respectfully disagrees". Expect another long-running legal saga.
